Survey methodology
The 50 websites assessed are all Irish and sell goods or services online. Each website was reviewed and scored against measures of good eCommerce usability in:
- The clarity and simplicity of the online checkout process
- Whether the site use secure connections for online transactions by credit card
- The inclusion of terms which protect the website from pricing mistakes
- The download speeds of the site based on a 1.44mbps T1 connection
- Whether customers have to opt-out to avoid extra charges or signing up to marketing messages
- The prominence of privacy policies and terms and conditions
- Whether the site passed the W3C code validity check
The scores were weighted by the AMAS research in terms of their importance to the fulfilment of an online transaction and their adherence to proven best practice checkpoints under AMAS’s eBusiness Audit methodology.
The websites were chosen by AMAS as a representative sample of leading websites across the main sectors.
